Empties #2: September 2015

Hi Everyone!

It has been an eternity since I wrote an empties post. I never feel like I have enough products or products that are interesting enough to discuss but I now realize that my empties are piling up. It seemed like my products were empty one after another this summer, so an empties post is well overdue.

IMG_0785

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

This was a holy grail item in my skincare routine for a long time. This is the bigger size they sell and it took me around 6 months to use it up. That doesn’t seem so bad, but this is so expensive. As of right now I haven’t been experiencing dry skin so repurchasing this isn’t necessary. To keep my skin moisturized I have just been using extra virgin olive oil and that seems to keep my skin just as moisturized. Now of course that could be seasonal as well, so when winter comes I may feel differently. I still don’t picture myself repurchasing this though. I think I will try out a most cost efficient oil like jojoba oil or stick with olive oil.

Equate Eye Makeup Remover

I purchased this solely to keep at my makeup table for cleaning up makeup mistakes, not for removing my makeup. This did a pretty good job of cleaning up any errors, but it burned so badly if it got into my eyes. I don’t quite get how this is marketed as an eye makeup remover when it burns like getting toothpaste in your eye. It was cheap, but not cheap enough to be worth it for me. I did finish this up, but I definitely won’t repurchase. I still need an eye makeup remover to clean up mistakes, but I’ll be trying something new.

Make Up For Ever HD Foundation

This is the first high end foundation I have ever completely used up. Well, maybe not completely used up; there might be a pump or 2 that I could squeeze out. I really liked this foundation. It looked great in photos and never looked cakey in person. I just started trying out the new formula, so we’ll see if it measures up.

LA Girl Pro Conceal- Classic Ivory

I have talked before about how much I enjoy this concealer so I won’t go on too long about it. This was in Classic Ivory, which was the lightest shade when I purchased this. They have since come out with several more shades and I’m now using a lighter shade. Classic Ivory is very peach toned so it does a great job of correcting dark circles.

Yummy Skin Premium Sugar Scrub

I won this scrub in a giveaway about a year ago and I was obsessed with it for a long time. It makes my skin feel like butter when I use it and it smells like lemonade. Win win in my books.

L’Oreal Magic Lumi Primer

This was basically empty at the beginning of this summer and I haven’t felt a huge desire to repurchase this. I love dewy skin but I have been reaching for my Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk foundation anytime I want my skin to look super glowy, so I guess I don’t really see a need for this product. By the time I use that foundation and a highlight I have glow for days and anymore would make me look like a hot dog.

Bumble and Bumble Invisible Oil Conditioner

I got this conditioner as part of a Sephora 500 point perk along with a shampoo and a sample of their oil. I really liked this conditioner, but the full size is $42 which is more than I’d like to spend for a bottle of conditioner. It did make my hair softer after using it, but I didn’t see any long term effects on my hair. I’m now using a hair oil that was half the price and it does the same thing.

So there you have it! What have you used up recently?

Bye for now!

June 2015 Favourites

Hi Everyone!

Somehow June has already flown by and it was time to gather my favourite things of the month. I always love writing these posts because I get to share the products that I just could not put down. I’ll admit a lot of June was ‘no makeup makeup’ looks just to look pulled together before I headed out the door. But of course there were days I could spend more time on my makeup, so I feel like my products this month are a blend of both of these kind of makeup days.

Bobbi Brown Cream Blush- Coral Calypso

IMG_0409

The first product I have been loving this month is this Bobbi Brown Cream Blush. I don’t own many cream blushes, but this one caught my eye and I’ve been loving it. It’s such a brightening summery shade. It looks great for a no makeup makeup look because it just looks fresh on the skin. I applied this with a kabuki brush most of the month, but after using my fingers to apply it I like that method much better. It doesn’t mess with any other products on my skin so I can blend it in nicely. This product has disappeared from Sephora’s website at the time I’m writing this. I hope it’s just a glitch because I’d like to get the other shade of this formula.

IMG_0396

Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Conditioner

IMG_0412

I have been trying to use up my Sephora points whenever a decent VIB perk comes along. A couple months back a set of Bumble hair products came up so I picked it up and this was included in the set. At first I didn’t really care for this, but now I’m really enjoying it. It’s been helping minimize knots and it keeps my hair soft until the next wash. It also smells nice which is a bonus. I would like to purchase the full size but it’s $42 so I might have to search for an alternative.

Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

IMG_0369

I have been forcing myself to limit myself on this one, that’s how good it is. I got this for my birthday as I mentioned in my review and I have been obsessed with it. It makes my skin look so airbrushed. The finish of this is unmatched elsewhere in my collection.

MAC Pigment English Gilt

IMG_0416

On days where I do have a little more time to spend on my makeup, i have been reaching for this pigment quite a bit. It goes really well with glowy bronzed skin. It’s the kind of gold I like to wear. It’s metallic, but muted and not brassy or yellow. This looks exceptional with cranberry shades in the crease, which suits my hazel eyes.

IMG_0401

Laura Mercier Foundation Primer- Radiance Bronze

IMG_0415

This was also part of a point perk set. I wasn’t sure this would work for me because it’s pretty dark and my skin is the colour of paper, but once this is all blended out it didn’t really leave any obvious colour behind just a nice glow under my foundation. As for it’s ability to prolong the wear of makeup, I’m not really sure because I never have issues with my makeup staying put since my skin is normal to dry.

LA Girl Pro Conceal- Porcelain

IMG_0414

My last favourite for the month has been a favourite for many months now. I bought my original tube of this back in September and I just replaced it with a new one recently. For less than $3 that’s pretty impressive. Since I last purchased it they’ve released a bunch of new shades so this time I picked up Porcelain which is a great match for my skin. This concealer is a really good corrector so I use this first to cover up darkness before I brighten under my eyes. It covers really well and blends out perfectly. Plus it’s dirt cheap so I highly recommend it.

So that’s all my favourites for the month of June. What have you been loving this month?

Bye for now!

This campaign is especially important to me and I hope that many of you will choose to take part as well!

FOTD: February 19, 2015

Hi Everyone!

It’s currently my reading week and today I decided to play around with a makeup look I haven’t really worn before to see how it would work out. I’m not going anywhere but sometimes these are my favourite days to just play around. I got a request from my friend Joy’s sister to test out a cut crease look. Although this isn’t a perfect cut crease yet, I still like the look. The perfect cut crease is going to take practice because I’m so used to blending out all harsh lines which kind of defeats the purpose of a cut crease. I’m working on it!

November 2014 Favourites!

Hi Everyone!

November is nearing it’s end and that means it’s favourites time! This will actually be the last monthly favourites of the year, as next month I will be doing my yearly favourites…that’s crazy to me. Hard to believe the year is nearly over and very soon this blog will be 1 year old. I have loved blogging over this last year and I can’t wait to see what’s ahead. But for now, let’s see what goodies November brought.

LA Girl Pro Conceal

Proconceal

My first favourite is a real bargain. I picked up this concealer a couple months back and I didn’t love it at first I’ll admit. Over time, it’s really grown on me. I ordered this in the lightest shade which is Classic Ivory and I was expecting it to me a skin tone shade, but it’s actually quite peachy which really helps to get rid of the crazy dark circles I’ve been sporting lately (student life, I blame you). It’s the perfect base for me to put down before I highlight to get rid of the majority of the darkness. I don’t love the applicator on this since it’s a bit messy, but for less than $3, I can live with that.

Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder

LMSecretBrighteningPowder

To go along with the concealer, I have a new player in my ‘battle the dark circles’ game. I recently got a sample of this at Sephora, used it all up and picked up the full size. This is one of those products that at first you question if it’s doing anything, you turn away, look back and BAM! Dark circles are gone. It is the perfect finishing step to brighten up my under eye area.

Make Up For Ever Artist Shadows- I524, M822

MUFEshadows

Pinky Beige, Plum

MUFEswatch

I don’t have a favourite palette of the month, but I do have a favourite that I added to my collection very recently. I haven’t had these long, but they were an immediate favourite. I have been loving these 2 shades out of the 7 I got in particular. Pinky Beige (left) is a really soft shade, almost like a peachy-pink champagne. It looks great on it’s own on the lid or with the other shade I have been loving in the crease. The other shade is M822 Plum. I wouldn’t call this a plum shade, it’s more a red-brown to me. It’s the perfect crease colour to add darkness but not take away any warmth. It’s an ideal fall shade as well.

MAC Powder Blush in Melba

Melba melbaswatch

Moving away from the eyes, I have one blush favourite this month. Last month I loved MAC’s Cantaloupe and I still do, but now I am also loving Melba. This is just the perfect neutral shade, it goes with anything. I love this on it’s own or mixed with Cantaloupe.

Nars Laguna Bronzer

Laguna

lagunaswatch

I have jumped on the bandwagon…sorry not sorry. I picked this up a while back and I cannot put it down. This is a great shade to warm up my skin with, it leaves a really pretty soft luminosity to the skin. I don’t contour with this, it just doesn’t create enough shadow to do that, but for giving myself some colour this is perfect.

Nars Audacious Lipstick- Raquel and Grace

IMG_5012

Raquelswatch Grace

Raquel, Grace

My last favourite was a spur of the moment splurge purchase. I swatched these in Sephora and that was the end of it. These babies were coming home with me. The first of the two shade I have quickly become obsessed with is Raquel. It’s a peachy pink-brown nude that doesn’t wash me out in the slightest. Then on the opposite end of the spectrum, is the shade Grace. Now I initially picked this up because of the name, but I quickly fell in love with the colour as well. It’s a bright red-orange shade, not something I usually reach for, but this shade is amazing. It stays put for hours and doesn’t dry my lips out.

That’s it for my November Favourites! I hope you enjoyed this post and leave me a comment below with your favourites!

Bye for now,

FACE OFF: Battle of the Sponges

Hi Everyone!

Today I have a duel for you…,two products are going to face off to see if one is really worth the extra money. Who will win?!? The Beauty Blender was for a long time the only sponge of it’s kind on the market with little to no competition. Then along came a $5 sponge from Real Techniques that has been challenging it ever since. So today I decided to see first hand if they are in fact dupes. In order to keep it fair, I opened a brand new RT Sponge and the Beauty Blender is fairly new as well. I am going to test foundation, concealer and then a final test of how much product they hold and use that criteria to determine a winner if there is one. I am not biased in any way, each side was given the exact same treatment and the results are fair. I would never manipulate a result one way or another. Okay so let’s get to it! Make your predictions now! No cheating! 🙂

Size and Shape

IMG_4855

When wet (as pictured) the sponges are pretty similar in size, but do differ in shape. The Beauty Blender is egg shaped with a pointed end for concealer, while the Real Techniques Sponge features a flat edge as well as a pointed end.

The left side of my face is going to be the Beauty Blender (side with the hair clip) and the right side (no clip) is going to be for the Real Techniques Sponge.

Sides

Foundation

Okay so I’m going to start by testing them on foundation. Each side was already clean and moisturized prior to the test. Each side is going to get 1 and a half pumps of Make Up For Ever HD Foundation dotted onto my face from the back of my hand.

Let’s start with the Beauty Blender. One thing I noticed right away when holding both of them is the difference in texture. The Beauty Blender is a very soft sponge, whereas the Real Techniques is much denser. It’s almost like the Beauty Blender is springy-er or something.

Here is what the Beauty Blender side (left) looks like compared to the undone side (right):

IMG_4866

Now onto the Real Techniques Sponge (right).

IMG_4869

I honestly don’t see a real difference between the two sides here, they look pretty even. The sponges are a bit different in terms of application, I was finding that the RT just needed a little more work to make sure the foundation was blended and even. But for the foundation test, these performed very similar.

Verdict: Tie

Concealer

Now to see if one sponge can come out on top for concealer. For this test I’m using the LA Girl Pro Conceal. I put equal amounts under each eye, blended and this was the result.

I think for this test there is a much clearer winner.

Here is the left side that I used the Beauty Blender for:

BB Concealer

It did a very good job and concealed most of the darkness.

Now onto the RT Sponge:

Concealer- RT

You can still see some of the darkness for this eye, so the coverage is not as good. The differences are very minor though.

Verdict: Beauty Blender

Product Absorption

For the last test I really wanted to see for myself how much product these sponges hold. To do this I took a white sheet of paper and stippled each sponge on half until no more product was being released.

Versus

You can see clear differences here. The Beauty Blender definitely holds more water, as it dampened the page more, but the RT Sponge definitely keeps more of your product. I’m sure that if you actually measured the difference between the two it would be miniscule, but it is something to consider, especially if you like expensive face products, as your product will get used up quicker by the Real Techniques Sponge.

Verdict: Beauty Blender

In all the Beauty Blender did win 2/3 tests. However I think that these are both great products and if you weren’t comparing them side by side you likely would never notice a difference. The price is a factor because there is almost a $20 difference, and I think the RT Sponge does an amazing job for only being $5. For this face off I really think it’s personal preference, whatever you are comfortable spending. I think if you purchase either of these, you can’t really go wrong because one is not miles better than the other.

Leave me a comment below if there are any other face offs you would like to see or what you thought of this post!

Bye for now!

LA Girl Glazed Lip Paints Review and Swatches

Hi Everyone!

I mentioned in my Beauty Joint Haul that I had picked up a bunch of the LA Girl Glazed Lip Paints and today I’m going to swatch them all for you and let you know what I think. These are super affordable, so I wanted to share them so you can decide if these are for you. Let’s get to it!

I picked up 9 shades out of the 18 available, ranging from light to dark so I could get a good idea of the range of these. All of these shades were applied with a lip brush, which is how I would recommend applying these as straight from the tube application results in a real mess.

Whisper

Whisper

Whisper is the first shade I picked up and also the lightest shade. This is a classic concealer type nude. I don’t like this one on me on it’s own, but I knew that when I purchased it and I bought it for the purpose of mixing. I think it washes me out on it’s own. So if you are of darker skin tone than me, I wouldn’t suggest this one to wear alone.

Elude

IMG_3410

The next shade I picked up is called Elude and it’s a soft nude pink. This is one of my favourites out of the shades I have, it’s perfect to wear everyday or with more dramatic eye looks. I recently wore this to a wedding with a grey smoky eye look. I think this would be very flattering on many skin tones.

Flirt

flirt

The third shade is called Flirt and it’s a bright pinky-coral. This is a pretty wearable way to wear coral and I think this shade will be perfect for spring and summer.

Peony

Peony

Peony is a brighter slightly more orange version of Flirt. I find this one to be a bit streaky and it takes a little more smoothing than some of the other shades. I still think this is a pretty shade and will be great with a summer tan (if I ever get one again haha).

Whimsical

whimisical

The fifth shade in my collection is called Whimsical. This a lavender with strong pink undertones. I had to pick up this shade, it’s a lot different than any purples I own. While this is lavender, the pink makes it more wearable. I love this one and can see myself reaching for it in the springtime. The only negative thing is that it makes my teeth look a bit yellow.

Tango

tango

On the brighter end of the spectrum we have Tango. Tango is a much darker coral with lots of orange. I think this is a great way to wear coral without it being too highlighter-ish. This also makes it easier to wear throughout the seasons, so even though it’s winter I still plan on wearing this.

Pin-Up

pin-up

The next shade is called Pin-Up and it’s a classic red. I really like this shade, I think it’s a good red for my skintone. Not a ton of orange undertone, which isn’t my favourite.

Seduce

IMG_3470

The second last shade I picked up is called Seduce and it’s a beautiful berry shade. This is so perfect for fall and winter and is deeper, but not super dark. It would be perfect for someone who’s not quite ready for full-on vampy lip colours.

Daring

IMG_3475

The last shade is the deepest of the bunch and it’s called Daring. This is much less pink than the last shade and deeper. I personally love vampy lip colours for fall so I’ll definitely be rocking this in the coming months! Lip colours like this are perfect for quick makeup days, you can do very little to your eyes and pull all the focus to a dark lip.

Packaging and Application

packaging

The packaging of these is a big part of this review, as it has a great impact on the outcome. As you can see, the packaging for these is a squeeze tube with a slightly angled top. It doesn’t have a sponge or anything to help limit the amount of product that squeezes out. Due to this style of packaging, I would highly recommend (as I mentioned earlier) using a lip brush with these. You need so little of these to get full colour and without a lip brush you will have such a mess. It blobs out way too much with no way to evenly spread it out. The lip brush will sheer it out a little and you are able to build it up to your desired intensity. I purchased a cheap lip brush from Real Techniques ahead of getting these because I knew it wouldn’t work well without one.

Lip Brush

Here are all the shades side by side:

swatches

From left to right: Whisper, Elude, Flirt, Peony, Whimsical, Tango, Pin-Up, Seduce, Dare

Versatility

These shades are so pigmented smooth, but I love their versatility even more than that. The best part of these is that they can be mixed. I just put a drop of each shade I want to mix on the back of my hand, blend with my lip brush and instantly you have a custom shade. You can experiment to give yourself even more shades than the initial ones you purchased. To show what I mean, I mixed Pin-Up with Seduce to make a red-berry shade, perfect for fall. I could have easily added more red or more berry to change this up. There are tons of possibilities. Need something lighter? Add some of Whisper in to lighten things up. The possibilities go on and on.

IMG_3503

To further extend their versatility, you can quickly make these matte. All you need is a little translucent setting powder. I have a sample of the Make Up Forever HD Setting Powder so I used that. I just took a fluffy eye shadow brush dipped it in the powder, tapped it off and brushed it over my lips. Now you have matte lip colours as well. For the price of $3.50, it’s amazing to me how versatile these are.

IMG_3512

Staying Power

In terms of staying power, these act much like a gloss. Only the 2 darkest shades I showed have any sort of stain effect and they will wear off after a few hours of wear. They do pretty well for a gloss type product, but they aren’t sticky at all so that does impact the staying power. I don’t like really sticky glosses, so I don’t mind touching up rather than super sticky.

Final Thoughts

Overall I think these are a great product for such an inexpensive price. I think the packaging could be improved to make for easier application, but the product inside is worth getting out the lip brush for. With 18 total shades in the collection, there are tons of possibilities. I think these would be great in a kit because they’re so easy to customize. I wouldn’t recommend these if you don’t like to touch up because these aren’t an all day product. If you’re looking to build your lip collection with lots of shades for an inexpensive price I would recommend these!

I hope you enjoyed this post. Let me know if you will be picking any of these shades up!

Bye for now!
